Plant Growth and Development is a 3 credit, level 5 optional course offered for the Bachelor of Science Degree programme. The principal means of intercellular communication within plants are “hormones”. Hormones are signal molecules that individually or coorporatively direct the development of individual cells or carry information between cells and therefore coordinate growth and development. This course introduces the hormonal concept in plants and gives you a description of six major groups of plant hormones and their applications in horticulture and agriculture.
This course also gives you the basic knowledge on light-regulated plant development or photomorphogenesis, responses of plants to blue light signals, the control of flowering or photoperiodism, the low temperature requirement for flowering or vernalization, seed germination and dormancy, leaf senescence, abscission and embryogenesis in angiosperms.
